Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA Interview

Interview with Joanna Johnson who is cast as Charlotte

November 29, 2016
Macaroni Kid had an opportunity to talk with Joanna Johnson who is cast as Charlotte one of Cinderella's step sisters in Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA playing at the Texas Performing Arts Bass Concert Hall.

MK:  Tell me about your role as Charlotte, the step-sister.
Joanna: My character Charlotte is one of Ella's step sisters. Traditionally, the step sisters have been called "evil" or "wicked". With our version, I wouldn't call Charlotte evil, but rather thoughtless, tactless, and not all that bright. But she also has good qualities, like intense loyalty, boundless energy, and desire to to do (what she believes is) the right thing.

MK:  Why do you think the story of Cinderella is still so popular with all ages?
Joanna:  Anyone can identify with Cinderella because we've all sometime in our lives been made to feel like we don't belong, or that perhaps our dreams are too silly or too fabulous to wish for. But I think we can learn from the show that this simply isn't the case! As the show likes to remind us, "It's Possible!"

MK:  What is your favorite scene and please describe without giving to much away?
Joanna:  My favorite thing to watch in the show is the ball. Getting to watch such an iconic love story play out before my eyes every night is truely magical!

MK:  What is your favorite song?
Joanna:  My favorite song to sing in the show is "Stepsister's Lament". My favorite song to listen to is "Loneliness of Evening".

MK:  Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
Joanna:  This is such a wonderful show. Ella and the Prince are such wonderful role model's for children,  and I hope that your readers will be able to join us is Austin!!
